How to add a custom metadata schema

Setup your own metadata schema

The general schema is just a minimum set of metadata that serves as a common ground for all collections in Maastricht Data Repository. It is possible to extend this schema with your own fields to improve the quality of the metadata for your specific purposes. The forms in Maastricht Data Repository are dynamically rendered based on CEDAR metadata schemas, with some limitations on the type of fields you can use.

The available metadata schemas in Maastricht Data Repository are managed and maintained by the Data Stewards. Feel free to contact us for more information or to get started on building your own customized metadata schema.

The process of setting up a schema

To make sure the schemas created in CEDAR perform well in Maastricht Data Repository, they need to go through a certain steps before they are available in production.

  • Create your own CEDAR account if don't have one;
  • DataHub will share the general fields with you to add to your custom schema, these are mandatory;
  • Define your own metadata in the CEDAR workbench and share the schema with DataHub;
  • Validation: We check if the new schema conforms to all the standards set during the design of the system. We will provide feedback if the schema should be updated.
  • Integration: We check if the new schema integrates with Maastricht Data Repository. We will provide feedback if the schema should be updated.
  • Release: The final check to see if the metadata schema works as intended. If accepted the metadata schema will be available after the next scheduled release.

We are still learning how to work with the CEDAR format and the flexible system in production. Expect 3 to 6 weeks of waiting time between finishing the first version of your metadata schema and the release to production.
